Classes are small (5-10 students) and each person is given
careful adjustments and suggestions for making the practice more
comfortable and effective. YogAlign is practiced in a non-competitive
fashion and student are never forced into postures or adjustments. I trust
that you are your own best teacher. I take the time to find out if you
have any injuries or muscle imbalances and show you how to do a practice
which will enable healing. This is not a "wimpy" practice however its
important that one learns to let the body dictate the practice and not
allow the ego to force the pose. I have listened for many years to
testimonies from new students about how they were hurt in yoga or
they never felt comfortable or they felt exhausted or felt like they could
not "do" yoga.
Yoga has become so "rote" that people feel they must
assume certain postures to be correct or they are not doing yoga.
Many yoga classes teach that you should lift your chin and look up every
time you move from posture to posture. By forcing the head forward of the
rest of the spine, you can do serious damage to your neck spine. Yoga is
about rooting in ease and if you are forcing your spine out of its natural
alignment in an attempt to touch your toes, you are doing more harm than
good. Yogalign works with the natural alignment of the spine and there is
no force. One learns to economize their movement and muscle patterning and
free the "kid" body.
In the Yogalign method, we move and breath from the very
core of the body using balanced effort from the psoas, spine and sacrum.
You will learn how your body is really connected and when you have the
internal visualization and can really feel your psoas and how it connects
your legs to your spine, you will become flexible without pain or force.
It does not have to take years to get flexible and out of pain. It just
takes an understanding of the blueprint for a naturally aligned spine and
a willingness to let go of the pain, judgments, and patterning that has
become ingrained in so many of us. Sitting in chairs for hours of each day
has destabilized and weakened our spines. Many yoga poses actually are
like sitting in a chair and then forcing the body forward at a right
angle. Its no wonder that people develop sacral pain and flat lumbar
curves form yoga.
Yogalign does not force you to practice asanas from a
ninety degree seated posture. I have found that by eliminating sitting or
bending with the legs straight, the lumbar spine is not forced out of its
natural curve and we begin to feel comfortable in our bodies again. Much
of the class is focused on letting go of tension which reveals the natural
ease and flexibility of our bodies. We are 67 to 72% water and our atomic
structure is more space than dense matter and Yogalign just shows you how
to feel your being as mostly water and space.
Classes are suitable for beginner to more advanced. I
emphasize the basic blueprints of the Yogalign Method and is quite
different from some of the popular yoga being taught. I will encourage
you to move out of the box.
